“For 'feng shui' reasons,” she explains, “I did not want the powder room in the front of the house. But locating it in the center meant that it was without windows. I found an actual
church window which I turned into a mirror and placed it so that it looks like a large window without actually having one. Also I had a faux painter create a mural of ruby-red drapes that adds to the effect.”
One of the things she and her husband appreciate most about their new home she says is the wonderful circulation provided by the layout of the rooms and space.
“We entertain often and have a big family. Louis' design offers such great traffic flow.” And the joy of welcoming people, she says, begins in the home's beautiful foyer.
“The elegant entranceway really sets the tone for what people are going to see in the rest of the house. But I wanted it on a human scale with elements of warmth, homeyness and beauty. And I especially wanted a circular stairway.”
Indeed, the vaulted, two-story foyer makes a dramatic statement with its expanse of oak floor - lighted from above by an antique chandelier that hangs from a golden dome. Just under the dome, the second floor has been designed to open to the foyer, offering views of the living room and dining room areas below as well as to the amenities outside through dormers.
