Neutra, Frank Lloyd Wright and many others.
The drama starts at the front door, where 12 x 24 inch two-toned taupe floor tiles, brilliantly curved to evoke a wave theme, appear as the backdrop for this artistic approach towards creating distinctive rooms. The imposing gallery is anchored by a freestanding 22-foot long curved sandstone wall again depicting a wave theme. A bronze-metallic wall covering clad the opposite wall section where dropped ceiling lights complete the gallery affect. An unobtrusive staircase with mahogany handrail and aluminum railings curves into a second floor balcony, and at the far end of the gallery floor-to-ceiling doors and windows flood the area with light and offer great views of the waterfront.
According to Najman, natural colors of gold, browns, creams and taupe filter repetitively through the overall color theme. Bold accent colors tantalize the visual senses as they add interest to each room. Passing a floor to ceiling green fabric covered coat closet, the living room presents itself as an eye pleasing array of custom designed sofas and chairs in ultra suede centered by a bold brown area rug. Flowing seamlessly into the dining room, we engage the other side of colorful freestanding wall from the gallery. A curved stone console appears to support the wall's two sections. The 10-foot exploded glass lapis dining table with two extensions is one-inch thick and rests on a stainless steel base. Modern art deco chairs upholstered in a confederate grey/blue fabric on the seat, are contrasted with a vibrant orange flexed fabric on the back complementing the warm patina of the mahogany frame.
Adjacent to the dining room is a large butler's pantry adjoining a striking kitchen with a water view. The commanding appearance of pewter laminate custom designed cabinetry features charcoal granite counter tops with vibrant orange glass tile backsplash. A 14-foot long, two-tiered center isle incorporates an impressive multi-colored glass serving bar that accommodates four stainless steel stools. What appears to be an extension of the room is an angled floor-to-ceiling space of doors and windows that envelopes the river-stone granite dining table. This indoor-outdoor space overlooks the ever-changing water view. From this area, the family room comes into focus bathed in natural light from the floor-to-ceiling walls of glass.
A three-sided fireplace rests on a green marble base and wall treatment. A mustard colored marble a wall sculpture protrudes atop the fireplace. Two-toned maple custom designed wall shelving and entertainment unit is built in the remaining wall space. Custom built ultra suede orange and cream sofas are inset in maple frames that extend to create side tables rest on a grey/blue wall-to-wall carpet following the curve of the tiled gallery flooring. Here, an open staircase leads to the lower level; again space was partitioned to create a trio of spaces for an equipped gymnasium, a media room, and a children's wing.
The media room exhibits more of the creative surfaces that we have come to expect from Najman including metallic wall covering, built-in sofas that appear to grow side tables from their base. Add a brilliant red color to the side table, frame the huge wall-mounted television with the red accent color and then bring in a block-patterned two-toned taupe wall-to-wall carpeting. A trio of varying sized metal coffee tables; stainless steel, bronze and brass adds a defining finishing touch. The children's play areas are a delight complete with multi-colored formica counters suitable for a myriad of childhood activities along with a sink suitable for wet play. Windows provide natural light and one section of the lower level provides egress to the outdoor decks.
Completing the first floor, and in harmony with the spacious elegance created by the seamless flow of space is the guest powder room. Shimmering surfaces are taken to the next level in this room where pewter and copper tiles on the lower walls are topped with gold glass mosaic tiles. A mirrored ceiling and milk glass modern art deco lamps add additional interest. The custom made stanchion and counter in gold glass tiles features a vessel sink. A three-dimensional mirror completes this stylish masterpiece.
It does not take a great deal of imagination to envision the quality lifestyle along with the entertainment possibilities inherent in the flowing, meandering, floor scape that has been established by Najman in this residence. Acknowledging the complexity of designing, building and having every item custom made for this project, Najman credits both his talented staff as well as his vendors. With a broad grin, he said his clients told him they wake up every morning and say, “We love our house!”…a wonderful sentiment for all involved and truly well deserved.
