Deborah Martin creates luxe look with tone and texture
PHOTOGRAPHY BY RANDY SCOTT SLAVIN
In establishing the direction of this floor to ceiling master bedroom renovation, Deborah Martin of Deborah Martin Designs looked to bedding for inspiration. She chose a semi-custom ensemble in soft pearl and sage solids paired with a patterned geometric for the large bolster that spans the width of the bed. The quilted sage silk coverlet incorporates exquisite details such as a sumptuous champagne satin lining repeated in the tailored bed skirt. A trio of Euro shams in a short and very soft shag-like fabric gives the bedding a fresh and playful twist.
Deborah designed a grand custom headboard executed to perfection in a shimmering patent faux leather that is the focal point of this North Shore home’s master bedroom. The headboard incorporates dressmaker details that include covered buttons and self-welting. A custom bed-end bench features an ivory matelassé fabric and nail head trim. Its lightly-distressed sandy linen wood finish is a quiet contrast to the pair of three-drawer mirrored chests flanking the bed. The mirrored
tops of the chests reflect a pair of crystal “ice block” lamps with champagne silk shades which are an elegant lighting source on either side of the bed.
Opposite the bed beneath the bedroom’s flat-screen television is a four-drawer chest whose hallmark is a beautiful silver leaf finish. Its four drawers provide ample storage. Adjacent to the chest but not pictured is a floor mirror whose concealed door opens to reveal a felt-lined interior with two shelves and a combination of hooks and pouches for jewelry storage. A glamorous statement piece, it is both decorative and functional.
The windows located on perpendicular walls incorporate soft-pleated blackout shades in the desert dust color used throughout the bedroom and quilted cream silk shaped cornices installed just below custom crown moulding. The decorative bead trim echoes the sage green of the bedding. A large custom area rug in a very long pile is incredibly soft to the touch and an inviting treat for bare feet. Its ivory color is a strong contrast to satin finish wide-plank dark wood flooring.
Lighting not pictured in the room include a three-arm chandelier with silk shades and cut crystals and a semi-flush ceiling mount fixture with cream ice glass and crystals. Both have a beautifully soft antique silver finish that compliments the room’s many sublimely elegant decorative elements which are the basis for sophisticated, timeless design.
