When the kitchen in this North Shore, Long Island house was enlarged as part of a bigger home renovation, the homeowners were more than ready for a major redesign. The couple enlisted the help of designer John Starck, Jr., of Showcase Kitchens. The company, celebrating 76 years and four generations of family tradition in the industry, has been located in Manhasset for 10 years.
“The clients wanted something very open with clean lines that would work well for cooking and entertaining,” said Starck. Also at the top of the homeowners' list of priorities was a kosher kitchen.
The first order of business was to remove the wall of a separate pantry, which had divided the kitchen. That opened the space for installation of 60 linear feet of cabinets. Signature Custom Cabinetry Inc.'s transitional line of cabinetry in hard maple features a shaker door style in a custom cherry finish. Matching cabinetry was also used for the large island.
Incorporating cabinetry across the large expanse of sloping windows makes them appear to “float” in the air. “The upper cabinets are lower than usual height and are very accessible to me, since I'm not that tall,” said the homeowner.
For kosher cooking, the redesigned space accommodates two Kitchen Aid dishwashers, two sinks and separate drawers for meat and dairy knives. A 42-inch, side-by-side Monogram refrigerator provides ample food storage space.
The kitchen floor features porcelain tile. Black granite was chosen for the countertops. Blue glass tiles lend a punch of color to the backsplash behind the cook top. Over the Dacor gas cook top sits a Best stainless steel and glass range hood. “When you turn on the light, the edge of the glass is illuminated in blue,” said the homeowner.
“I like everything about my kitchen. It just works great.”
